1903.19 Abatement Verification: citations, penalties and recently cited employers
Data as of October 5, 2026 · citations issued Oct 5, 2025 to Oct 5, 2026
After receiving a citation, an employer must certify to OSHA that each cited violation has been corrected by the abatement date and, for many items, submit proof such as photos, invoices, or written plans. The rule also requires employers to tell affected workers about abatement activities and to tag movable equipment that was cited. It applies to every employer that receives an OSHA citation with an abatement requirement.
What the standard requires
- Certify correction of each cited item within 10 calendar days after the abatement date
- Submit abatement documentation when the citation calls for it
- Provide abatement plans and progress reports when required
- Inform affected employees and their representatives of abatement steps
- Tag cited movable equipment until the hazard is corrected
Hazards it addresses
- Cited hazards that remain uncorrected after inspection
- Workers exposed to equipment with known, unresolved defects
Cited in any industry after an inspection, typically when employers fail to respond to follow-up abatement requests.
